How to use a compass

Picture
This is a straight forward tutorial with a self-correcting little practice activity at the end.

The activity can be done several times. A new challenge is generated each time. The student must manipulate the compass to determine the direction and then select the correct option from a multiple choice bank.

Reading A map

Picture
This site is from the American National Parks Service. It has a brief tutorial about some common map symbols and how to interpret them.

There is a brief self-correcting activity at the end in which students must apply their knowledge of map symbols to make choices about scenarios involving a day in the wilderness.

**The tutorial uses inches and miles when talking about the scale of the map.
